I am drawing near the end of a most normal summer travel week (vacation travelers, late planes, short sleep nights, storms, mechanical issues, no gas so let's cancel the plane and bump you later, no upgrades, and best of all the people who do not get it about the liquids and gels at security lines when you are running late for a plane!) . I found myself in 5 states in less than 48 hours (CO, KS, IL, KY, IN) and not sure there is anything particularly blogworthy until I was walking around Jasper, IN tonight dodging mosquitoes and watching my first fireflies of the season.
I noticed a sign that said "Enjoy Buffet" and thought - Jimmy Buffet? Do Judy and Don know I'm here and playing a joke? Warren Buffet? Oh - Chinese Buffet. Why on earth do you need "servers" on a buffet line? Aren't buffet lines "self serve"?
On my walk, I found this sign in the picture to the left Prisoner Import and Export. Is prisoner import and export a way to boost the economy in this small town? I walked around the parking lot, looking at the rather nice building and somewhat empty parking lot trying to figure out who, what, where, when and how do you "qualify" for import or export status. I think it's worth a walk back early in the morning to further investigate what goes on in this small Indiana town of Jasper! It looked like a police station. If it is a police station, then why would you need to label with such a small sign where to import and export prisoners? I found a little more on the topic tonight, still curious http://www.duboiscountyin.org/offices/corrections.html
I thought the highlight of the evening tour was my last stop at Huck's in search of bottled water on my way back across the street to the hotel (100 yards from the Prisoner sign). Hucks is a premier independent gas station complete with local flavor. On impulse, I thought what a better place and time to buy a Powerball ticket. Don't the people in small towns who buy their tickets at gas stations always win??? The http://powerball.com/ is at $75M this week for Saturday, June 28. I had no idea til I walked up to the counter that I was going to buy a ticket. This seemed bloggable and will be quite bloggable if I'm a lucky winner!
As I looked at my messages, a picture appeared and this was truly the highlight of my evening! A fabulous picture of Pink/Peach Roses imported directly from the City of Roses to my cell phone. Thank you Kimberly! they are beautiful! (See blog last week referencing my lack of rose finding in Portland.)

You're not going to believe this, but I LIVED on Hucks in college. They supplied us our Doritos & Mountain Dew for four years. I had almost forgotten about that chain. The sign hasn't changed in 20 years. Thanks for the blast from the past!
Mystery Solved! The Dubois County Jail, the County Sheriff's Department, and the County Work Release program are all located in the same complex of buildings across from the Days Inn and movie theater. Prisoners are imported and exported from the Jail. The sign is there to direct officers to the jail aka Security Center and away from the work release center aka Community Corrections.
Thank you!!! I have been to Jasper, IN twice and think it a great town. I appreciate the info. It was a very nice facility and didn't look "like a jail" and fit into the community nicely!
